Q.
Has your hunger for learning benefited your firm more widely?
A.
I sure hope so, since I went on to lead it! But at the time, leading the firm was a goal furthest from my mind. I enjoyed the adrenalin of mergers and acquisitions and working with clients. Although I never sought the role, I’d also regularly been engaged in leadership in a smaller context. In hindsight, my involvement in important committee work gave me the opportunity to both learn and demonstrate decision-making skills, business judgment, and leadership capacity. And in turn, it allowed my partners to get a strong sense of my values and priorities.
These were the experiences that led to a role of co–managing partner, and then national managing partner and chief executive. And why did I agree to such a big change? Well, it was an opportunity to make a difference. And I thought, That’s a challenge, and definitely one great, steep learning curve.
I became chief executive partner in 2009, at the onset of the Great Recession. Not auspicious timing, but the adage “Let no crisis go unused” resonated. The economic crash allowed me the opportunity to accelerate change and pursue a far more sophisticated business model. We’ve not stopped as a firm, and I can safely say that we’ve now embraced change; innovation is the foremost priority for us.
